The US has announced additional military aid worth $988 million to Ukraine. The new aid package includes drones, tanks, ammunition for rocket launchers and equipment and spare parts for artillery systems, the US Department of Defense announced on Saturday.
Washington is Kiev’s main supporter in the war against Russian invading forces, but newly-elected US President Donald Trump has criticized the billions in aid.
Three-way meeting in Paris
On Saturday afternoon, Trump met Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky in France, and Emmanuel Macron was there too. The French president also used the reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris for political discussions on Saturday.
Macron first received Trump with the Republican Guard, a handshake and a short hug. As he welcomed him, he said it was a “great honor for the French people” to welcome Trump to Paris. About 45 minutes after Trump, Zelenskyj arrived at the French president’s official residence, a reporter from the AFP news agency reported.
At the start of the meeting, Trump praised his “great relationship” with Macron. Referring to the numerous conflicts around the world, the future US president said: “It seems like the world is going a little crazy at the moment and we will talk about it.”
The new American president wants to end the war in Ukraine
During the election campaign, Trump announced he would end the war before he was sworn in, but without explaining how. There are fears that the future US president will cut aid to Ukraine and that Kiev could be forced to acknowledge territorial losses to Russia. However, after an earlier meeting between Trump and Zelensky, the latter seemed confident.
After meeting Trump again at the Elysée, Zelensky wrote in online networks that he had “a good and productive” meeting with Trump and Macron. “We all want this war to end as quickly as possible and in a just manner,” he added. During the conversation, the ‘situation on the ground’ and the possibilities for ‘a just peace’ were discussed.
