The government of France, meeting for the first time this Monday after the cabinet remodeling, has defended that it will be up to the Justice to clear up the controversy surrounding the Minister of Solidarity, Damian Abadaccused of rape by two women, although he has pointed out that the only legal complaints against him have been filed twice.

The launch of this new phase of government kicked off this weekend with information from Médiapart echoing the complaints of two women, one of them through the courts, about alleged sexual abuse committed by Abad more than a decade ago.

The Executive’s new spokeswoman, Olivia Grégoire, has emphasized that there are “zero tolerance for sex offendersand a “total hearing of the alleged victims”, in line with what Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said on Sunday, but for now the government has avoided confirming the suspicions.

“The aim is to find out the truth” and “it is the justice that has to do it,” Grégoire added in his appearance before the media.

However, the spokeswoman pointed out that the only case that has come into the hands of Justice, “filed twice by the same person and for the same facts”, was filed in 2012 and 2017. “If there were any other victims, they should go to court unconditionally,” he added.

This complainant had reported to authorities a story about alleged situations of harassment and non-consensual sexual practices, while a second woman reported to the Observatory on Sexist and Sexual Violence in Politics on May 13 that, after meeting Abad, she woke up was put in a hotel room with the feeling of being “drugged”.

The minister has denied all of these allegations, pointing out that he has always had sexual relations “by mutual consent”, even using his physical disability as an argument to try to demonstrate that he could not commit any of the acts attributed to him.
