To combat the shortage of staff in kindergartens, Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) wants to recruit more career changers. By 2030, an additional 13,700 skilled workers will be needed.
That is why the personnel offensive for lateral entry of teachers “Great Job” is being expanded to the field of primary education.
According to the Ministry of Education, the intention is to inform people who are already interested in the professional field and to inspire others to practice the profession. Polaschek referred to the success of the lateral entry program for teachers. As part of the ‘Class Job’ initiative, we have managed to attract more than 3,500 applicants.
Some rails for career changers
In addition to the regular training for nursery school teachers at the Federal Training Institutes for Primary Education (Bafep) – in the five-year forms with a secondary school diploma or the colleges for adults – there are already some pathways for career changers.
Since 2021, people with relevant prior education can continue their education at teacher training universities (PH), and recently even bachelor graduates from all disciplines can do so.
Since the autumn there has also been a special offer for graduates of social educational institutions. There are also bachelor’s degrees at universities, which are primarily intended to qualify people for kindergarten management, and master’s degrees at the University of Graz. There is also a six-semester follow-up course for graduates of secondary vocational schools.
