Well, meal! On behalf of the AK Upper Austria, Belan Civiltechniker GmbH examined both the sensory and microbiological quality of citizens. The result was sobering. Even when only one sample was assessed as affected, an increased number of enterobacteria was found in seven out of ten samples.
The basis for the evaluation were “guidelines and warning values for heat-treated, ready-to-eat foods” in accordance with the recommendations of the German Association for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM) and legitimate consumer expectations.
Burgerista burger with a top note
Nine out of ten citizens met the quality requirements. However, upon closer inspection, certain differences became apparent: the “Classic Burger” from Burgerista in Linz was “top” from a microbiological and sensory perspective. The burgers from Kentucky Fried Chicken in Ansfelden and Rox-Music & Grill in Pasching were also rated “perfect”, despite a slight reduction in sensory properties.
Seven samples with bacteria
An increased number of enterobacteria was found in seven samples. Enterobacteria are widespread in the environment. For example, they occur in the soil or are part of the intestinal flora of humans and animals. For food, enterobacteria are considered general hygiene indicator germs. If they are found in large numbers in the food, this indicates contamination of the ingredients or hygienic deficiencies in processing.
However, it cannot be ruled out that the germs come from the salad or cut vegetables used, for which the DGHM does not provide guideline or warning values. The pathogens found are therefore not considered grounds for a complaint, but do not correspond to the legitimate expectations of consumers from the perspective of consumer advocates.
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
One product also had a microbiological contamination by Bacillus Cereus above the guideline value. At high concentrations, these bacteria can potentially cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. However, given the germ content found here, there is no health damage. Additionally, the trained tasters criticized the patty as sour and dry, as well as the sour taste of the sauce. Overall, it was therefore determined that the sample was of diminished value at the time of the examination.
