Now it’s official: the successor to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will be Jens Stoltenberg! The Norwegian will remain in office for another year.
The extension of Stoltenberg’s term had already become clear. The main reason is that the European NATO countries cannot agree on a successor. The Secretary General is usually from Europe, while the US provides the Supreme Commander of the Alliance.
Stoltenberg: “I feel honoured”
This is the Norwegian’s second term extension. His contract had already been extended to September 30, 2023 in March 2022. Stoltenberg tweeted on Tuesday that he was “honored by the decision of NATO allies”. “The transatlantic alliance between Europe and North America (…) is more important than ever,” continued the 64-year-old.
