The National Council unanimously condemned Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel on Friday afternoon. At the same time, politicians demanded that the kidnapped hostages be released and that international humanitarian law be respected. However, aid payments to Palestine will not be suspended, prompting criticism from the FPÖ.
Terrorists have already financed a luxurious life with money from Europe and kept the civilian population in poverty, says MP Susanne Fürst (FPÖ). Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) responded that the civilian population must be supported. The Palestinians must have access to water and food, said SPÖ MP Christoph Matznetter. He wishes that people would no longer be used as a protective shield for a terrorist organization.
ÖVP: Hatred does not only apply to Jews
The National Council agreed on Friday that Hamas’ attack on Israel should be condemned. “There should be no misplaced solidarity with terrorists,” said ÖVP foreign policy spokesman Reinhold Lopatka. A barbaric gang of criminals can only be fought to the end. The hatred applies not only to Jews worldwide, but also to free, open society. “Anyone who tries to portray them as a liberation front has lost their moral compass,” says Ewa Ernst of the Greens.
Schallenberg called the unanimous vote an important signal. The Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip must be released unconditionally. But the Austrian government is not blind in one eye. Settler violence in the West Bank is ‘unbearable’.
Two-state solution supported
Another content of the application is the two-state solution, which the FPÖ, among others, agreed to, although it criticized the payments to Palestine. NEOS mandate Helmut Brandstätter in turn accused the Freedom Party of not speaking out enough against Russia’s terror against children.
