The general coordinator of the Abertzale coalition has not clarified whether the next candidate for lehendakari will be a woman. Otegi assures that there are more and more people who believe that the values and projects that the coalition represents are their own and believe that this is more important than who the candidate will be.

Arnaldo Otegi announced this morning that he will not be the EH Bildu candidate for lehendakari in the next elections to the Basque Parliament, in 2024, and aware that the previous candidate for lehendakari, Maddalen Iriarte, the names dance of the candidates. Asked about his decision not to run for office, he replied that at this political moment he can contribute more as coordinator of EH Bildu than as a candidate for lehendakari in the Basque Autonomous Community.

He also talked about the future PNV candidate for lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, making it clear that he sees him as the ‘clone’ of Iñigo Urkullu, and therefore assures that he will be the candidate for ‘continuity’. In this sense, he has said that “regenerations are political”, not biological, and that changing the names will not change things one way or another. “People want different policies to be made,” he added.
On the other hand, regarding the new education law of the Basque Country, Otegi has announced that the political table of EH Bildu will propose to the militants to vote ‘no’. In this regard, he does not understand how the PNV has accepted, as the PSE-EE has requested, to maintain the language models. He believes that behind this decision there may be an agreement between the PNV and the PSE-EE for the next parliamentary term.
