Vaccination obligation remains suspended during the summer: Violations of the obligation should have been punished from mid-March, but on the advice of the expert committee, the vaccination obligation was suspended until June 1. According to another recommendation from the experts, this arrangement will now be extended into the summer, Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) and Constitutional Affairs Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) announced on Tuesday.
On Monday, the Committee of Experts on the Accompanying Monitoring of Mandatory Vaccinations presented its second report on the need for universally mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations from a medical and constitutional point of view. She draws a clear conclusion: Taking into account the current epidemiological situation, the high level of immunity in the population, the low number of infections and the easing of the situation in hospitals, a renewed suspension of the general COVID-19 vaccination requirement is recommended .
“In light of the assessment of the vaccination obligation from a medical point of view and the constitutional requirements, an immediate implementation of the vaccination obligation as of June 1 does not seem necessary,” the report said verbatim.
Government follows recommendation
The federal government has therefore decided to follow the advice of the vaccination commission and to suspend the general vaccination obligation against COVID-19 for another three months.
“In its report, the committee of experts provided for by the law clearly confirms that vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself from the virus. However, an implementation of the general vaccination obligation is not proportionate at the moment. A violation of fundamental rights such as mandatory vaccination must meet clear criteria and be accurate. The general vaccination obligation is therefore suspended,” says Edtstadler.
