Regulations are here! – Monkeypox: week-long quarantine for symptoms

Date:

The Ministry of Health’s Monkeypox Ordinance has just been issued. Therefore, contacts are only separated when they develop symptoms. But it can then take a very long time before they are allowed to leave their home or hospital again.

The advice for the official procedure when contacting monkeypox is here. The Ministry of Health sent the document to the responsible health authorities in the countries on Tuesday morning. The result is surprising: close contacts classified as K1 only need to be quarantined if they show symptoms. Hospitalization is not absolutely necessary for the sick.

Contacts are registered
According to the recommendation, these contacts should be contacted and registered by the health authorities. However, they only need to be isolated at home if they develop symptoms themselves within 21 days. This is followed by a diagnostic laboratory test by the health authority. If the disease is diagnosed, the patient only needs to go to the hospital if the doctor or health authority so decides. If the course is mild, then home insulation will suffice, which will not stop until the last scabs have healed. This can take two to four weeks.

No other case in Austria
Currently there is no further contamination in Austria. An infected 35-year-old is admitted to the Favoriten clinic in Vienna. “Nobody should be afraid of being immediately isolated if they come into contact with monkeypox. In principle, you are only isolated if you have been in close contact with a symptomatic case of monkey pox and you are showing symptoms yourself,” said Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Groenen).
