New in the EU Parliament – Pirchner: “I’m not going to be diplomatic”

Date:

After Simone Schmiedtbauer (ÖVP) returns to her native Styria as a regional councilor, former TV presenter Wolfram Pirchner follows her as an EU representative. He has only been in office for a few weeks and is already making a clear announcement for the upcoming European elections in June 2024.

The conversation with the new MP starts with a Freudian slip: “Over the next five years I will be committed to mental health care and seniors.” Finally, the Tyrolean corrects himself: “I meant the next five to six months, of course.” Then the current legislature ends.

In September, the bestselling author learned he was moving up the list. When the call came with the offer, the daughter was brought in as an advisor. “She clearly told me the answer had to be yes. I owe that to the voters.”

Use for seniors with driver’s license
Wolfram Pirchner has already taken a clear position on the subject of driver’s licenses and seniors. “The specified health examinations exceed the red lines of the ÖVP. I also don’t think it’s a good idea to abolish L17. I myself was released into humanity after a 15-hour drive. I drove 2,000 of the 3,000 kilometers with my daughter. There is no better driver’s license training. This is my opinion.”

During his first press conference in Strasbourg, France, it became clear that the former TV presenter does not hide his opinion. “Unlike other politicians, I can get emotional. I certainly won’t become diplomatic.” Another important topic for the EU politician is mental health. In recent years he has spoken publicly about his panic attacks and published four books about them. His goal: affordable care for all citizens.

Discussions have been going on for weeks about the upcoming ÖVP list for the 2024 EU elections. While other politicians are still reluctant to say anything about it, Wolfram Pirchner makes a clear announcement: “I register my interest for the coming legislature. If the party doesn’t take me, it’s their own fault!” There should be an official list in February, then see if the Tyrolean’s name is also at the top.
