Viennese city boss Michael Ludwig now has the street opponent from his own ranks on his neck. “The train goes over it – the Lobau Autobahn is being built, protests or protests!” This was adamantly urged in SPÖ circles before the party congress.
And with that, Mayor Ludwig – as reported – has taken the oath for reasons that are understandable from a traffic engineering point of view. The mayor will almost certainly “cement” this position at the state party’s conference on Saturday.
Resistance of a “green” group
Most comrades go along, but Ludwig has to reckon with internal resistance from a “green” group from his own ranks in the halls of the exhibition center in Vienna, where the big gathering of the Reds is taking place. In the district parliament, six Juso dissidents had already secured a majority against the party line in an anti-tunnel resolution by the Greens and Left in December. As reported, the large demonstration in front of the fair was banned by the police.

City councilor Czernohorszky also faces resistance: under the leadership of ÖVP councilor Caroline Hungerländer, all opposition parties, including the Greens and the FPÖ, spoke out in favor of better financing for Lower Lobau, which otherwise threatens to degenerate into a desert.
