What the coffee house is to Vienna, the beer cellar is to Prague. Federal President Alexander van der Bellen had a first, unofficial meeting there with future Czech President Petr Pavel, who will be sworn in in a few days. The former NATO general is coming to Austria before the summer for a state visit.
The two meetings with the former and the next Czech president can also be taken as a signal of how troubled relations with Austria’s former favorite neighbour, Orbán’s Hungary, have become. The Czech Republic is also retreating economically and has become the Central European focus for investment from Austria.
“Prague Ice Age” probably over
But why there is still no through highway between the last two European capitals, Prague and Vienna (and Prague and Linz), has been a running gag for decades and will probably remain a mystery. Is this due to previous “Prague Ice Ages”? Now a new attempt must be made to connect the borders.
