The Citizens’ Climate Council, which is based in the Department of the Environment, met for the last time this weekend. According to information from “Krone”, the topic of speed limits was hotly debated. The results are now being processed and presented to politicians in early July.
Apart from that, Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler is quite impressed with a speed reduction to 100 or 110 km/h on highways. Gewessler: “That’s smart, right now,” she said on Monday at Ö1. Going off gas means saving money, doing something good for the climate.
The implementation of such points requires a majority in parliament. If this reduction in speed is included, the minister can in any case be prepared for strong headwinds.
The FPÖ has already expressed new ambitions with a “clear no” to Gewessler. The minister conducts ‘customer policy’, says traffic spokesman Christian Hafenecker. “A speed of 100 km/h on the autobahn makes no sense. The fuel savings are minimal and the vehicles are becoming more and more economical.”
The debate about a general speed reduction on Austria’s highways continues to grow in the country. In Tyrol, for example, people are used to it – the limit has been in effect since the introduction of the “IG Luft-100ers” on parts of the Inntal and Brenner autobahnen.
