National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka will no longer be the ÖVP’s top candidate in Lower Austria in next year’s elections. Possible alternatives could be Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner or Interior Minister Gerhard Karner.
“Wolfgang Sobotka is renouncing the top candidate in Lower Austria because we also have a Klaudia Tanner and a Gerhard Karner,” said the governor of Lower Austria, Johanna Mikl-Leitner in an interview with the “Niederösterreichische Nachrichten.” This was confirmed by the office of the Chairman of the National Council. According to the report, Sobotka leaves it open whether he will even run again for the National Council elections.
“The president always only crosses bridges when they are there,” said a spokesperson. The 67-year-old politician led the Lower Austrian People’s Party as its top candidate in the National Council elections in 2017 and 2019. In 1988, he was appointed regional councilor in the Lower Austrian state government, later becoming deputy governor and minister of the interior Affairs.
