Austria has just confirmed the agreement with Romania and Bulgaria on “Schengen Air”, border-free access by air.
As the Ministry of the Interior confirmed on Saturday, a corresponding legally binding text was sent to the Spanish EU presidency on Friday evening. Romania had announced the agreement days ago.
Access to the EU no longer via foreign terminals
The agreement means that in the future, travelers from Romania and Bulgaria will no longer have to fly to other EU countries via international terminals. Passports are checked at the gate by the airlines with the support of the police.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, all EU member states must first agree to the agreement for implementation. The earliest possible date for the introduction of the scheme would be March 2024, as flight schedules are being changed this month.
At the same time, the Ministry of the Interior noted that there are currently no negotiations and therefore no date for the full accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the border-free Schengen area.
