New era needed: – “Parties are viruses within the system”

Date:

2024 is a super election year. In Austria, Upper Austrian David Packer wants to shake up politics with his ‘Best Austria’ movement and revolutionize it with innovative approaches: “I just believe that party politics is outdated,” says Packer in an interview on krone.tv with Jürgen Winterleitner .

Packer criticizes the lack of implementation of citizens’ concerns, despite existing citizen councils such as the Climate Council, and emphasizes the need for a new approach in Austrian democracy towards a “Third Republic”, as he says.

“Referendum instead of party government”
With its non-partisan initiative, Upper Austria aims to develop participatory solutions through citizen participation processes that go beyond party interests and must be represented in parliament. “It’s actually about a new culture. About a culture in which citizen participation is paramount, with a kind of rule of the people instead of party rule.”

The Austrian constitution and system are in principle very good. “What we have, however, is a virus within the system and that is the parties. And in my opinion, getting rid of these parties is the essential task of a new political era.”
