Vice Chancellor overtaken – surprising salary emperors in top politics

Date:

Thanks to real and ‘half’ zero pay rounds, strange shifts will occur in the salary pyramid of domestic top politicians from the summer at the latest. Viennese Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and Lower Austria Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) are even overtaking Green Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens).

As expected, federal politicians have declared a zero wage round for the 2024 election year. As is known, state governments rely on their own creative solutions.

Burgenland was the only state to waive increases. Carinthia, Vienna and Lower Austria will increase their salaries by the full inflation correction of 9.7 from July 1, all other countries by 4.85 percent since the turn of the year. The different pay rounds cause strange shifts.

The mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, and the governor of Lower Austria, Johanna Mikl-Leitner, will overtake Green Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler and ÖVP National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka in their salaries from July (see chart up here). They will then be tied for third place among political earners in Austria, after the Federal President and the Chancellor.

Who Wiederkehr and Landbauer overtake
Their deputies will also trail political celebrities when it comes to salary increases. Viennese deputy mayor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) and Lower Austrian deputy Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) are overtaking Sobotka and almost overtaking Kogler in the summer after the “zero wage round” in the first half of the year. Moreover, they will both soon earn much better than the red state leaders Hans Peter Doskozil (17,654 euros) and Peter Kaiser (16,200 euros until July 1).

Both already raise more than their party leaders Beate Meinl-Reisinger and Herbert Kickl, whose salaries as club chairman are each 16,211 euros. Landbauer recently announced that he is already donating part of his salary…
