The Austrian government has been unable to reach an agreement on the leadership of the Federal Administrative Court for more than a year. There has been no boss on the Old Age Safety Committee for two years. Negotiations are “still ongoing,” said Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens).
The search for staff was caused by the fact that former section head Walter Pöltner resigned as chairman at the end of 2021. He felt that the government was not taking pensions seriously enough. The Elderly Safety Committee was established in 2017 and consists of twenty members (not including the chairman), such as representatives of the social partners, various ministries and seniors and youth organizations. She draws up reports on the pension system and analyzes both statutory pension insurance and expenditure on pensions for civil servants. The main emphasis is on future development and financial viability. The committee does not have many options to decide anything.
Agreement with Nehammer and Brunner required
Yet the search for a new boss is difficult. Social Affairs Minister Rauch must appoint an expert in the field of economics and social sciences or labor and social law in consultation with Chancellor Nehammer and Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (both ÖVP). He announced this after a parliamentary question from NEOS. “Negotiations to appoint a new chairman are still ongoing.”
However, Pöltner’s resignation had “no influence” on the completion of the assignment, according to the Ministry of Social Affairs. The meetings are currently convened by the vice-president, seniors association leader Ingrid Korosec. The last medium-term report was published at the end of November. The period is five years and runs until November 2024.
