COFAG, abuse of power – U-Commissions: Evidence may still be needed

Date:

Meetings of the two investigative committees into the ‘Red-Blue Abuse of Power’ and the Covid financing agency COFAG are scheduled for next Thursday. It is expected that evidence will have to be provided before the hearings in March.

The informants can also be specified. In any case, the FPÖ had already announced that it would invite former Finance Minister Gernot Blümel, his successor Magnus Brunner and Chancellor Karl Nehammer (all ÖVP) and investor René Benko to the COFAG committee. COFAG is the federal government’s Covid financing agency, which was established in March 2020 to, among other things, provide domestic businesses with lockdown income replacement. To this day, there is a lot of criticism of the process, such as awarding too much or too slowly.

The investigative committee, which should shed light on the events, was at the request of the FPÖ and SPÖ. The ÖVP also announced a commission into the “red-blue abuse of power” at the end of November. This is about the role of the PVV and the Social Democrats in placing advertisements, filling management positions in the board and the role in other areas.

The studies will start in March
The investigations in the COFAG committee will start on March 6 and 7, followed a week later by the ÖVP-U committee. After that it changes every week. The last opportunity for interviews is on May 22 and 23 respectively. In both cases, the chairman is Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP), chairman of the National Council, who has recently come under repeated criticism. For example, in 2021 he proposed to suspend the obligation of those who testify to the truth in the Ibiza Commission of Inquiry.
