A recent survey shows that only just under a fifth of Austrians (19 percent) are in favor of introducing a 30 km/h speed limit in cities and local areas. On Wednesday, the federal government submitted an amendment to the StVO for review, which simplifies the introduction of lower speed limits.
Among 30 to 39-year-olds, more than 19 percent are at 31 percent and among people with a university degree (28 percent), AutoScout24 reported from a survey on Thursday.
Clear majority in favor of maintaining 50 km/h
81 percent believe that 50 km/h in populated areas is largely a good speed and allows for a quick response, according to the Innofact survey commissioned by Autoscout. Moreover, according to those surveyed, it is difficult to travel through the city by car anyway. Especially 90 percent of people under the age of 30 see it this way. In the age group with the most parents of small children, the situation is different: only 69 percent of 30 to 39 year olds agree with this statement.
64 percent for 130 km/h on highways
19 percent of respondents are in favor of introducing a speed limit of 100 km/h on the highway. But almost as many people (18 percent) are calling for the complete abolition of the speed limit on domestic highways. 23 percent of men are in favor of lifting the limit, while only 13 percent of women are. However, two-thirds (64 percent), and therefore the clear majority, are clearly in favor of retaining the current regulations. For the study, a total of 510 Austrians between the ages of 18 and 65 were interviewed in December 2023, representative of the population.
Municipalities and cities should be able to implement speed reductions for schools, hospitals, etc. more easily in the future. The federal government has reached agreement on a corresponding amendment to the Road Traffic Act (StVO), which will be discussed on Wednesday. It is scheduled to come into effect in the summer of 2024. “Lower speeds mean more safety and quality of life for the local population,” says Gewessler.
