The former mayor of Vienna, Michael Häupl, once said that election campaigns were a time of targeted ignorance. He meant all parties. In addition, there are promises that cannot be fulfilled in all political areas, commonly known as ‘election candy’, reckless announcements of pseudo-solutions and populist quick actions.
1. If Häupl is right, this does not mean anything good for Austria in the super election year of 2024. We think back to the 2008 election campaign with trepidation. Billions of euros were distributed by politicians with our tax money. There was an increase in family benefits, an increase in healthcare allowances, the end of tuition fees, and so on and so forth. Lots of good sounding stuff. But almost everything was withdrawn after the elections because it proved difficult to finance.
