The medical profession in Austria and Germany is calling for measures to control the risk of drug supply bottlenecks in Europe.
Following joint consultations between the German Federal Medical Association and the Austrian Medical Association (ÖÄK), the vice president of the German Medical Association, Ellen Lundhausen, emphasized on Saturday that health insurers and manufacturers “must pay more attention to aspects such as ensuring the possibility of prices to deliver.”
Europe must become more autonomous
“This also includes the issue of sufficient production locations in Europe. Nearly 70 percent of the production sites for active ingredients intended for the market in Germany and other European countries are located in Asia. This endangers the security of supply in this country, because we lack sufficient alternative options in the event of quality defects or delivery problems,” Lundhausen said in a press release.
And further: “Europe should be able to meet a larger share of its own needs. The preconditions for diversifying supply chains, for production in Europe and for sufficient supplies must be sustainably improved.”
Politics must act
ÖÄK Vice President Harald Mayer called on politicians to take action, because the responsibility for the supply of medicines “clearly” lies with them. “This also includes the willingness to invest in the European production of supply-relevant medicines. Europe must finally become autonomous and independent of other markets when it comes to the supply of medicines.”
