The secretly recorded statements of the now deceased section chief Christian Pilnacek have no legal consequences for National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP). There was initially no suspicion of abuse of office.
As the “Krone” revealed in November, Pilnacek had spoken in a Viennese bar about the fact that Sobotka accused him of never stopping investigations. The conversation was secretly recorded and became public after his death. Sobotka rejected Pilnacek’s story. The Public Prosecution Service for Economic and Corruption (WKStA) then investigated whether proceedings should be initiated. However, there was initially no suspicion of abuse of office, it was announced on Monday.
Unknown people still in the crosshairs of the judiciary
The WKStA has not fully included Pilnacek’s statements in the file. “Unknown decision makers” are still being investigated on suspicion of abuse of office.
“Once again, all accusations against the President of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka, have proven false (…). This is a surprise for us as a popular party. On the contrary: what Christian Pilnacek said in the U Commission under the obligation to be truthful has always applied to us (…),” People’s Party Secretary General Christian Stocker said in a broadcast. Anyone “who participated in the prejudice” must apologize.
