The race to the polls begins in Galicia, with the unknown about the PP’s absolute majority

A total of 75 regional delegates are elected. The PP candidate, Alfonso Rueda, could be on the verge of losing the absolute majority that his party has had for four terms in Galicia.

This morning the election campaign for the regional elections on February 18 in Galicia starts. Lugo, A Coruña and Santiago are the cities chosen by the candidates of the three main Galician political parties (PP, BNG and PSdeG-PSOE) to start the campaign.

In elections determined by the unknown regarding the absolute majority enjoyed by the PP in Galicia for four terms, the panorama outlined by the CIS suggests that any left alternative must go through the BNG, together with the PSOE; While both parties remain at the bottom of the bracket, they would also need Sumar’s support if they achieve representation.

On the day the race to the polls begins, the current Xunta president and popular candidate for re-election for the PP, Alfonso Rueda, will move to Lugo; the leader of the BNG and the party’s candidate for the presidency of the Xunta, Ana Ponton, opens the campaign in A Coruña; and the socialist José Ramón Gómez Besteirowho will debut as a candidate for the Xunta after his return to the political frontline, has chosen his hometown of Lugo to kick off the election campaign.

For his part, Sumar Galicia, with the candidate for the Xunta Martha Lois at the head, the Podemos candidate, I, will travel to the coast of O MorrazoSaber Faraldohas also chosen A Coruña for the gluing act, and finally, Alvaro Diaz-Mellafrom Vox, the race will start in Vigo.

An election campaign will take place between February 2 and February 16. Between those days, political parties will be able to solicit votes, deliver electoral propaganda and hold debates. February 12, six days before the election, will be the last day for election polls to be published.

More than 2.6 million people are called to the polls, with 1 in 6 (almost 18%) living abroad. In total they choose 75 regional delegates (25 alternates for A Coruña; 14 for Lugo; 14 for Ourense and 22 for Pontevedra). All indications are that the foreign vote will be the key.
