The young investigative committees have already uncovered the first bizarre case. Files on health insurance reform were archived by former FPÖ Health Minister Beate Hartinger-Klein in the state archives, as required by law, but are blocked from all institutions – from parliament to the Court of Audit to the ministry.
The reason for this is that they were archived under the seal ‘private’. From the current perspective, there is no way to circumvent this, as Andreas Hanger, faction leader of the ÖVP faction in the U committees, told “Krone”.
Almost all parties are now in favor of reforming the archives law. One possibility would be that Hartinger-Klein takes back the seal. The former head of the State Archives, Wolfgang Maderthaner, had unsuccessfully appealed to the government to use the abolition of official secrecy as an opportunity to revise the federal archives law.
