Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil called on Friday evening for more efforts to reduce the number of asylum applications in Austria. For him, these include a fixed upper limit and the correct application of the Dublin Regulation. An asylum payment card cannot prevent this, says Doskozil in “Zeit im Bild 2.”
The different situation in Austria must be taken into account when it comes to the asylum payment card, which is intended to allow migrants in Germany to buy food and clothing, among other things. Germany has fewer asylum seekers per capita than Austria. Moreover, there are already more benefits in kind in this country than in the neighboring country. For Doskozil, the asylum payment card is mainly an extra bureaucratic effort.
Comparison with the angry Brunner
Instead, he sometimes advocates financial support for the repatriation of asylum seekers with a negative decision. From that moment on, there is no more money for services other than necessary care. Doskozil is convinced that currently 95 percent of people applying for asylum would be allowed to stay in Austria. Anyone who receives a negative decision will be tolerated and can apply for a humanitarian right of residence.
“We no longer have the situation under control.” The politician compared the asylum situation to the outrageous Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP). It would be like the minister going to the authorities the next day and immediately getting his driver’s license back.
“Megaphone in Ungarn”
While procedures for which other countries are responsible are carried out in Austria, migrants in Hungary would probably have to go through the country with a megaphone (note: Hungary has few asylum applications across the EU). Doskozil repeated his well-known call for an upper limit of 10,000 asylum applications per year – Austria was well above that last year with around 60,000 – and urged compliance with the Dublin Convention. Migrants should be deported to the European country they entered first.
Country can “only stimulate”
According to the governor of Burgenland, the European rules have not been updated in recent years. In short, distribution within Europe would be necessary. In addition to the EU, the federal government is responsible for asylum and its laws, and the country can only encourage this. When asked, Doskozil also emphasized that the upper limit was simply a position of Burgenland and that it had not been agreed with the other SPÖ state parties.
