Construction to begin in 2025 – The executive branch will have a new security center in Vienna

The Council of Ministers decided on Wednesday to build a new security center for the executive branch. Construction will take place in Vienna’s 12th district, on the site of the Meidling Barracks. The State Security Directorate, the intelligence services and the federal criminal investigation department are housed there.

There is also the Federal Office for the Prevention and Combating of Corruption, the Digital Services Directorate, Cobra Vienna and units to combat cybercrime. A company kindergarten will also be located at the location. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner was pleased to say that the security center will turn five locations into one. This makes you more efficient and powerful.

Construction will start in 2025 and will not be completed until 2031 at the earliest
It will take some time before this is realized. According to the Minister of the Interior, construction should start in 2025. The implementation will then take six to seven years and the move will take place in phases. Karner’s thanks went not only to the city of Vienna, but also to the Ministry of Defense. The security center can only be created at the Meidling site through a restructuring of the Federal Army’s facilities.

On Wednesday it was actually decided that the Ministry of Defense may transfer the area in question to the federal real estate company. This is then rented to the Ministry of the Interior. This means that nothing stands in the way of implementation.

The military part of the Meidlinger barracks is being redecorated
In concrete terms, this concerns the military part of the Meidlinger barracks, also known as the Heckenast Burian command building. A total of four hectares of the barracks, which are no longer needed for military purposes, will be sold to the federal real estate agency. According to the Ministry of Defense, Federal Army employees have been notified in advance of this project and will move to new locations by the end of 2024.

Other locations are being modernized
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) said the proceeds will be used to modernize other locations in Vienna. A total of 47.7 million euros, which will be additionally available as a result of the sale, will be included in future infrastructure planning as part of the “2032 Reconstruction Plan” and used for other federal army properties.
