Declaration of war on the right – NEOS: EU citizens must register to vote

Date:

On Thursday, NEOS called on EU citizens living in Austria who are eligible to vote in the EU elections on June 9 to register. It is about “shaping Europe together”.

The NEOS will start a social media campaign for this, Secretary General Douglas Hoyos and EU party leader Helmut Brandstätter emphasized together at a press conference.

All EU citizens who have their main residence in this country and wish to vote in the European elections in Austria must be registered in the European electoral register of an Austrian municipality. This must be done by March 26 by means of an application.

Germans form the largest group
According to Hoyos, about one in ten of the nine million people in Austria are affected, i.e. about 900,000 people. The largest group consists of Germans, followed by Romanians, Hungarians and Croats. The goal of the pink information campaign is for all 900,000 affected people to register, Hoyos said.

Brandsätter reminded that there are only 100 days to go until the elections and again promoted the European Union. The goal of NEOS is the “United States of Europe”. But this would be opposed by right-wing populists such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Brandstätter said: “They want to take away our votes. But we will actively oppose that.” The Hungarians living here in Austria would also be happy that they live in an open democracy.

Declaration of war on right-wing populists
“On June 9, we must ensure that we do not allow ourselves to be pressured by right-wing populists,” the pink top candidate emphasized. The NEOS stand for a more direct democracy in Europe, for example for the direct election of the President of the Commission and for a smaller and more powerful Commission.
