In Vienna, the discussion about faster and cheaper naturalizations is heating up. The ÖVP is strongly against it and convenes a special state parliament.
Statements by leading politicians of the “Left Bloc” (© ÖVP-Vienna) have startled the Turks. After Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) recently spoke out in the “Krone” in favor of a more liberal practice of naturalization. The red-white-red pass at a “cheap rate”? That is not possible for the Mahrer team.
The ÖVP is requesting a special state day on Thursday, to be held before mid-July before the summer holidays. “It is clear to us that under no circumstances should the existing criteria be relaxed. Knowledge of German, a clean track record and the ability to survive are essential. We also reject a significant cut in state contributions,” said state party leader Karl Mahrer.
The NEOS wants to lower taxes on obtaining citizenship. Austria is quite strict when it comes to naturalization compared to other EU countries. The principle of descent applies. Children receive citizenship from their parents. As a rule, anyone immigrating must have been in the country for ten years in order to apply. The procedure sometimes costs several thousand euros.
Although the legal matter is a federal matter, it is up to the states to implement it. This leads to various state taxes and administrative hurdles.
