Rudolf Anschober: – “A large part of politics is not doing its job”

Date:

What can a better life look like in the climate transition? Former Minister of Social Affairs and Health Rudolf Anschober outlines possible predictions in his new book and beams readers into the year 2040. For Anschober it is clear: a life adapted to climate change does not necessarily mean without it.

More greenery, much dismantled cities, extensive public transport and bearable hot summers because trees provide shade: ‘It becomes more pleasant to live.’ In his book ‘Bringing Back the Future’, Anschober not only underlines what the adjustments in our society look like. but also how it got there in 2040 – what steps are needed for that. “We realize that it is not that simple. Science tells us we need to promote climate change this decade. And at the same time, climate policy is in a very serious crisis. Many people resign, oppress, some even deny it. And a large part of politics is not doing its job. That’s why I devoted a lot of space to it.” But a conversion takes time. That is why it is important to take action and look positively at the future.

“Right-wing parties thrive on problems
Anschober, however, is less optimistic when asked about the National Council elections in the fall. “Yes, election victories for right-wing parties would not make me optimistic. Because some of them are very populist parties that actually have no solutions because they thrive on problems. That’s the tragedy.”

“I am not someone who knows everything better”
Anschober does not get involved in the party politics of the Greens, of which he is still a member. “I am not someone who knows everything better and shouts from the sidelines. But I think it would be good for this country if there were no far-right majority. In my opinion, it would be good if there were a majority of parties committed to climate protection, to a climate future, to a good future for the country.”

Schilling’s ORF faux pas: “No criteria”
Anschober finds only positive words for 23-year-old Lena Schilling, the Green Party’s best EU candidate, who is repeatedly criticized for her age: she is a wonderful, committed woman with a high level of competence. “The courage of young people must also be rewarded.” We must be forgiven if Schilling was initially unable to answer ORF satirist Peter Klien’s question about when the euro was introduced in Norway. “That is not a criterion,” says Anschober. “These are facts that any one of us would give the wrong answer in one way or another, because no one knows everything. These are things you can Google.”
