By applying highly qualified unnecessary delays, requests for a prison sentence are reduced to a fine. The rest deny the charges and ask for a free acquittal.
Six of the twenty-one suspects in the trial for the serious disturbances that took place during the first ‘Surround the Congress’ have reached an agreement with the Madrid Public Prosecutor’s Office on sentences that will be replaced by fines of up to 1,320 euros after recognition of the events that took place on the night of September 25, 2012 and apply a highly qualified restriction of unnecessary delays.
The trial started this morning in the Criminal Courts of Madrid with the preliminary questions and the testimonies of the National Police officers who intervened in the operation of the government delegation in Madrid.
The suspects face penalties of up to eight years in prison for crimes including public disorder, attack on authority, resisting, damage and wounding.
During the protest, approximately 6,000 people gathered peacefully in Neptuno Square against institutional corruption. The demonstration was eventually broken up by police charges. The final balance was 34 arrested and 64 injured27 of them police officers.
Prior to the hearing, the lawyers of five of the suspects reached an agreement in consultation with the parties on the recognition of the crimes. By applying highly qualified unnecessary delays, requests for a prison sentence are reduced to a fine.
For example, six suspects acknowledge a crime of public disorder, for which they accept a prison sentence of eleven months, replaced by a fine. Two other defendants have also been sentenced to eleven months for the offense of aggravated assault using a dangerous instrument and three others have been sentenced to two months and twenty days in prison for common assault. Eight organizers of the event were prosecuted by the National Court. Was among them Elena Martinezcurrently spokesperson for the Assembly of Support for the Suspect and at the time spokesperson for the 25S Coordinator.
Upon her arrival at the court, the activist indicated that the trial is part of ‘a repressive escalation“which started twelve years ago” with Cristina Cifuentes as government delegate in Madrid.
Through their lawyers, the defendants who withdraw from the agreement deny the crimes and request a free acquittal. The lawyers have provided videos, stills and photos that would prove their clients’ innocence.
