Former SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner completed her hearing before the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday. The new director of the ECDC health authority spoke about vaccinations. Confidence in its effectiveness must be restored, Rendi-Wagner said.
The population must be able to “make informed decisions”. This requires, among other things, country-specific campaigns. Overall, vaccination rates in the EU should be higher again, the former health minister and former SPÖ leader said. The corona pandemic has made people aware of the importance of health policy again, and the EU health authority ECDC has played an important role in providing politicians with data.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is responsible for preventing and controlling infectious diseases in the EU. In late February, Rendi-Wagner was introduced as the new head of the authority. Before taking office, the epidemiologist had to make a statement before the European Parliament and answer questions from the Health Committee.
Worked in the department for ten years
After studying medicine, the former SPÖ politician worked for almost ten years in the field of tropical medicine and infectious diseases. From 2011 to 2017 she was Director-General of Public Health. During this time she had been a member of the ECDC Board of Directors for six years. From March to December 2017, Rendi-Wagner was Minister of Health and Women’s Affairs under Chancellor Christian Kern (SPÖ), and federal party leader of the SPÖ from November 2018 to June 2023.
