The Junts candidate has assured that his return cannot be “an act in the service of an electoral strategy” nor an “act of provocation”.
The Junts candidate for the presidency of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont, announced on Tuesday that If he is not elected, he will leave active politics president and has said he will return to Catalonia on the day the investiture debate is held in parliament, even if he is not the candidate for president.
In statements to RAC1, Puigdemont has assured that his return cannot be “an act in the service of an electoral strategy” nor an “act of provocation”: “I will only return to Catalonia on the day of the investiture debate. The return of the presidency is for the country, not the party. It must have institutional significance,” he said.
Puigdemont has stated that he does not see himself “as the head of the opposition” in this term, and has hinted that he will leave active politics if he is not elected president.
“I cannot sit in the Senate, I will not sit on the board of directors of a company,” said Puigdemont, who has indicated, however, that he is not preparing the “speech of defeat”.
