The head of Sumar’s list for Álava believes that Sumar’s role now “is to continue to promote left-wing policies” because “again we will have a left-wing majority in the Basque parliament and again a government that is not progressive.”
Jon Hernández Hidalgo, head of the summary list for Álava and the only parliamentarian elected to represent his party in the Basque Parliament, stated on Monday that the election result “was not a great result”, but he assured that, taking into account the polls “We are happy and calm about the minimal presence in the Basque parliament.”
In an interview with Radio Euskadi, Hernández Hidalgo regretted that Alba García did not get a seat because “she was a good candidate who played a big role and took on a big responsibility.”
Regarding the decision to stand apart from Podemos in the elections, he acknowledged that they knew that with that divided space “things would become more difficult,” so “now we have to think in order to continue working.” According to him, “the federal left can grow and consolidate because that space is present in Euskadi.”
Asked about Sumar’s role in the next term, the head of Álava’s list believes that now is “the time to continue promoting left-wing policies.” “We will again have a left-wing majority in the Basque parliament, but a non-progressive government will emerge again,” he said. “We will continue to promote these left-wing policies,” he added.
