Johannes Anzengruber, a former mountain farmer and former ÖVP member, is the newly elected mayor of the Tyrolean capital. He was very happy with his victory in the second round of elections against the incumbent Georg Willi (Greens), but he did not yet have a desired coalition in mind, he said in the first ‘Krone’ interview. The first exploratory discussions will start on Monday.
“Kron”: Did you expect this result, are you surprised?
Johannes Anzengruber: When I saw the numbers, a shiver ran down my spine. It’s a strong sign. Above all, it is a sign of all the residents of Innsbruck who put their trust in me and my entire team. That is good and gives strength for the negotiations, for the coalition talks and for the future. Also because my team and I want to put people first.
Do you already have a coalition in mind?
No. We will immediately start discussions on Monday – depending on strength and with all groups represented in the city council. I look forward. Anyone who is willing to act with passion and commitment, and who is also willing to put the substantive policy for Innsbruck first, will certainly be present.
What would your dream coalition be?
I think a stable coalition is important and that we get things done. That you live by the values such as respect, appreciation and humanity and set a good example and show the population how cooperation works.
What is the first thing on the political agenda?
To have conversations, to see how we can reach an agreement as a coalition and how we can implement projects for the next six years and beyond.
Is there anything you would like to do differently than your predecessor?
Sitting at the table together much more, talking and communicating much more, trusting each other much more.
It has now emerged that two people on your list have received an unusually high number of preferential votes. Does that worry you?
So in 2018 I had even more.
Are you calm about the WKStA investigation against you?
Yes, I’m glad it’s being investigated and I’m sure it will be cleared up. I still believe that I did nothing wrong and that no one was harmed.
What motto would you propose for the next legislature?
Innsbruck ahead!
