The Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor will present a new package on Wednesday. This includes anti-inflation measures in energy and food. Details initially remained open.
In the fight against inflation, Austria has so far followed the strategy of supporting growth, strengthening purchasing power and keeping unemployment low. According to coalition circles, Austria is among the best in the world in terms of prosperity. In terms of purchasing power, Austria ranks fourth in Europe and has a very low unemployment rate, and the youth unemployment rate is the third lowest in the EU.
At the same time, inflation remains high. Persistent inflation is affecting more and more people – especially those with low to middle incomes are under pressure from high prices for housing, food and energy – for example due to strict regulation.
energy and food
It is heard from government circles that Chancellor Nehammer (ÖVP) and Vice Chancellor Kogler (Greens) want to present a package of measures to the Council of Ministers on Wednesday after numerous talks in recent weeks. On the one hand, the focus is on energy prices, as energy companies hardly pass on falling wholesale prices for electricity and gas to end customers and at the same time make high profits. So energy prices are still a useful lever to dampen inflation, as they also affect other sectors and their pricing. They can also relieve households directly.

On the other hand, according to reports, measures should be taken in the food sector to make food chains more responsible. The government was recently under pressure because tangible results could not be presented at a food summit. Many people would only have explained “why something doesn’t work,” said ÖGB president Wolfgang Katzian.
SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner and the FPÖ again announced a special session and even a vote of no confidence in the government. Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Kocher and Minister of Finance Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) said they still wanted to meet experts.
