Now it is certain: the Beer Party will participate in the upcoming elections for the National Council in the autumn. Party founder Dominik Wlazny announced this at a press conference on Tuesday morning. “Yes, we will do that. We came to stay,” Wlazny emphasized.
The failed presidential candidate had already declared his willingness to stand as a candidate in January, but at the end of April he mentioned 20,000 members or a budget of 1.2 million euros as a condition. At the end of March, the beer festival had more than half a million euros as a basis.
The membership target was also around half of the desired number a month before the end of the reflection. He did not reveal what the current figures look like on Tuesday.
Receptacle for protest voters
In almost all recently published studies, the Beer Party easily exceeded the four percent mark. The left-of-center movement mainly attracts protest voters and could have been an unpleasant opponent, especially for the SPÖ, the Greens and the KPÖ.
During the Hofburg elections, Wlazny proved that he certainly has an audience. There, the medical graduate, who for a long time was best known as band leader Marco Pogo, came third with 8.3 percent of the votes, and even second in Vienna.
