In the Danish capital Copenhagen, several European ministers discussed on Monday how they can stop or at least curb illegal migration to Europe. Austrian Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) is also participating in the conference, and the “Krone” will also be present.
The content is mainly about migration cooperation with third countries. Austria and Denmark are close partners in the fight against illegal migration and pioneers in Europe when it comes to cooperation with third countries in the field of migration.
Karner and Bek together in the Tunisian desert
Both countries jointly helped set up a training center for border guards in Tunisia and opened it in November 2023. Karner and his Danish counterpart Kaare Dybvad Bek were present. The center is located in the Tunisian desert near the city of Nefta.
The Copenhagen conference will develop new models for cooperation with third countries. In addition to coordinating with each other, EU Member States will also exchange ideas with third countries and international experts on new options in the fight against illegal migration.
High level conference
In addition to Bek and Karner, participants in the conference will also include the Ministers of the Interior and Migration of Italy, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, representatives of third countries such as Albania, Tunisia and Mauritania, as well as EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson and international experts.
“We want to reduce illegal migration”
“Cooperation with countries outside the EU, so-called third countries, in the field of combating illegal migration is the central theme of this conference. We want to effectively combat organized crime in the field of smuggling and thus massively reduce illegal migration to Europe and Austria,” Karner says in advance.
