Third country nationals – Karner wants to deport criminals to Kosovo

Date:

The federal government wants to move forward with plans to transfer convicted criminals from third countries to Kosovo to serve their sentences. Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) discussed this with the Danish Minister of Justice on Tuesday. Denmark is already working on a corresponding agreement.

In a bilateral conversation with Danish Minister Peter Hummelgaard, Karner asked about Denmark’s options and plans. “Detention facilities like the one Denmark is planning in Kosovo are also part of Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s Austrian plan,” Karner said. Under the heading “Security”, the Austrian plan presented in January also mentions the “transfer of convicted criminals from third countries to serve their sentences (…) in third countries”.

Karner also discussed with Hummelgaard the options for combating cybercrime and measures for monitoring courier services, which the ÖVP requested when the Ott case became known.

Migration conference in Denmark
On Monday, Karner took part in a migration conference in Denmark where cooperation with third countries was discussed. In the past, Karner had cited the British Rwanda model, which envisions the deportation of illegal migrants to the East African country of Rwanda, as a model. Implementation in EU countries requires a change in “EU regulations”, he demanded.
