As in the last ranking in 2019, the city of Vienna was again able to take first place in the ranking of the most transparent municipalities in Austria. Wels took second place for the first time this year. Two thirds of the 80 most populous municipalities have improved, only a third have remained largely the same.
Vienna achieved 87.45 percent of the possible points. Wels got 78.14, Linz 77.90 and Graz 77.32 percent. The climber Wels improved by no less than 19.44 percentage points. Transparency International Austria (TI) announced the results on Tuesday. The index is a measuring instrument for which data and information are published by municipalities.
Mayors are happy
In general, the CEO of TI Austria, Eva Geiblinger and TI CEO Alexander Picker appeared in a joint press conference with the mayors of the cities of Vienna (Michael Ludwig, SPÖ), Wels (Andreas Rabl, FPÖ), Linz (Klaus Luger, SPÖ ) and Viennese Deputy Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) are very satisfied with the evaluation.
A total of 50 criteria
A total of 50 criteria are examined for the index. The categories include, for example, budget, finance, personnel selection and spatial planning. The municipal companies and purchasing categories, on the other hand, are below average. According to TI, the latter is considered a problem area prone to corruption. There is “air for improvement” here.
Level depends on the size of the places
The degree of transparency does depend on the size of the locations. This means that larger communities or cities usually do better. However, according to TI-Austria, smaller municipalities are always found in higher places. Current examples are Perchtoldsdorf (10th place) and Hornstein (15th place).
