Aranzadi and the UPV/EHU Human Rights Chair today presented the conclusions of the report on the death of the ETA member, Txabi Etxebarrieta The report’s authors state that “Access to Case 16/68, in which the victim’s forensic report is found and the conflicting statements of the vigilantes responsible for the death, as well as the collected testimony, have been decisive in clarifying the the death of Etxebarrieta. It follows from this data and the legal analysis of the case that there is a high probability of a direct violation of Txabi Etxebarrieta’s right to life.”

On a day like today, 54 years ago, Etxebarrieta was the material author of the first murder by ETA, of the agent Joseph Pardines and he was the first militant of the armed organization to die. After a historical investigation and legal analysis of the data, there is a possibility that there has been a violation of Txabi Etxebarrieta’s right to life.

On the one hand, this memory has its origin in the research that Aranzadi is doing in the municipality Toulouse, on the identification of victims of politically motivated violence. And on the other hand, it answers the request of the relatives of the deceased with the aim of clarifying the events that ended Etxebarrieta’s life.

The death of Txabi Etxebarrieta occurred on June 7, 1968. In preparation for the report, Aranzadi conducted a historical investigation and legal analysis regarding the event, from the perspective of the serious human rights violations that may have been violated.

A paradigmatic case

In the words of the person in charge of the project, the Doctor Javier Buces “It is necessary to point out that the death of Txabi Etxebarrieta, after he was shot by agents of the Guardia Civil, is a paradigmatic case among the unresolved deaths of police officers, mainly due to two factors. On the other hand, Etxebarrieta appears as the first perpetrator of ETA, and in turn, as the first ETA militant killed by police officers, all in just two hours on June 7, 1968.”

According to Aranzadi, this event is an example of the importance of historical research to clarify the facts produced in this historical framework, as well as of the need to contrast the official sources of the dictatorship and the treatment they have received in recent years. . year.

In that sense, according to those responsible for the study, we must “consider the media impact that the case has received since 2018, largely sponsored by the dialectic or debate that is taking place in relation to politically motivated violence of recent decades in regarding the Basque conflict”.
