Not least because of the fuss surrounding the green EU list leader Lena Schilling, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has made an appeal to the parties campaigning for the elections. “Politics is one thing and private life is another,” the red-white-red head of state emphasized on ORF radio on Tuesday.
The former Green Party leader explained that he often wondered whether the tone in politics had become more ruthless in recent years. But the tone between the SPÖ and ÖVP was also strident in the 1950s and 1960s. Therefore, one should not exaggerate in this regard. “But the tone is too strident,” the president said.
“Politics is one thing, private life is another.”
About the Schilling case, Van der Bellen told Ö1: When you are young, you don’t make mistakes, even if you have made one in the first place. In any case, he certainly made some. Van der Bellen was able to avoid dragging his private life into election campaigns: “Politics is one thing and private life is another.”
Van der Bellen is happy with Schilling’s efforts
The head of state emphasized that he did not yet know Schilling. But he has made appointments with the top candidates for this week. In short, Van der Bellen stated that he was happy with any young person who was willing to sacrifice his time for important issues such as measures against climate change or the EU elections.
