The government is increasing property protection at Jewish institutions. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) announced in a broadcast on Saturday that 50 additional soldiers will be deployed. The protection of the Israeli community is a high priority due to the increased threat level. In consultation with the Israeli Religious Society, additional measures have been taken since Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel last fall.
The Jewish community in Austria has a reliable partner in the federal government, emphasizes Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP). Anti-Semitic insults, attacks or assaults on Jewish institutions would not be accepted and would be punished with the utmost determination. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) emphasized that high-level protection will be further strengthened.
Nehammer had met with representatives of the Israelite Community the day before. Together with Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler (both ÖVP), he condemned the increasing anti-Semitic attacks.
