“A good example” – Nature conservation: Chancellor is against EU rules

Date:

Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) makes it clear to krone.at that he has very little to do with the new EU regulations on so-called renaturation.

“Austria is a model country when it comes to protecting our nature and environment,” says the Chancellor, and we would like to remain so – but for that we do not need “totally excessive regulations”. Nehammer sees this rather as a “model example of overregulation from Brussels”.

The scheme therefore does not take regional circumstances into account. “We will not agree to this arrangement out of responsibility for Austria,” he said.

The land blockade crumbled
The background to the clear rejection is probably the most recent demand on this subject from Vienna. After his call last Friday to “get closer to the EU renaturation regulation that is now in force,” Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) promoted the issue again on Wednesday. With the help of Carinthia, Ludwig had previously succeeded in breaking the resistance of some federal states.

Also Gewessler for it
It was said from EU circles that the necessary qualified majority among EU countries would probably be achieved with Austria’s approval and that in this case it could be voted on again – but that will not happen with Karl Nehammer. This is likely to disappoint the green coalition partner, Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler had also spoken out in favor of “enabling Austrian approval”.

The environmental protection organization WWF recently put it dramatically: The blockade of EU legislation is technically “unsustainable”: however, it is dangerous not only for climate protection, but also for “food security in Europe”.
