Among the Greens, Thomas Waitz, second on the list, received more preferential votes than top candidate Lena Schilling. At least this is evident from the provisional results of the European elections in Vienna, Salzburg and Upper Austria.
Waitz received 24,618 preferential votes in Vienna, while Lena Schilling received 13,648 nominations, according to the preliminary results. That is enough for fourth place in the federal capital. There, Waitz, SPÖ top candidate Andreas Schieder (19,638) and FPÖ list leader Harald Vilimsky (15,097) had more preferential votes than the young candidate.
In Salzburg, Vilimsky received the most mentions (4,158), namely two-thirds of all his party’s preferential votes. ÖVP party leader Reinhold Lopatka received the second most votes (3552). Only among the Greens did the second on the list overtake the first on the list.

In Upper Austria, Waitz Schilling also overtook the place. The Styrian organic farmer and EU parliamentarian finished ahead of the climate activist in all five constituencies. Angela Winzig of the ÖVP achieved the strongest result in terms of preferential votes (34,324), overtaking her party’s top national candidate. Vilimsky came in second place.
The provisional result is based on the count from election Sunday. Absentee ballots received that day will be counted Monday afternoon. The figures will not be official until Wednesday afternoon, after the election commission has decided on the results.
