After their election victory, Republicans in the US Senate elected John Thune as the future majority leader of the legislative chamber. This means that Donald Trump’s favorite candidate, Rick Scott, could not prevail.
Thune, 63, has been in the Senate for the state of South Dakota for almost twenty years. There he is part of his party’s leadership circle. Trump’s allies recently tried to get radical Senator Scott from Florida elected.
The 71-year-old is an avid Trump supporter and would have been a less traditional choice for the post than Thune. However, Thune also staunchly supported Trump and his plans. He is not considered an opponent of the US president-elect.
The McConnell era is coming to an end
In last week’s American elections, Republicans won a majority in the Senate. Democrats will still be in control of the House until January, with Republican Mitch McConnell as his party’s minority leader. At the beginning of this year he announced that he would resign from his top position.
Thune became involved in politics early on. In 1997 he became a member of the House of Representatives and in 2005 he was elected senator. Thune initially criticized Trump for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden. But he quickly fell back in line behind Trump. In the spring he voted for billions in aid to Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia.
