EH Bai has decided to become part of the new Popular Front of the Left established in France in view of the elections to the National Assembly which will take place on 30 June. The members of EH Bai will stand for this candidacy in the constituencies of Ipar Euskal Herria.
In a statement, EH Bai assured that it “fully assumes its responsibilities as the first left-wing force in Iparralde.” 95.3% of militants advocated joining this front during an extraordinary meeting on Thursday, June 13.
In these elections Ipar Euskal Herria is divided into three constituencies. The Popular Front will have the following candidates in each of them: the socialist Iñaki Echaniz and Cécile Senderain from civil society, in the fourth constituency; the socialist Colette Capdevielle and Alain Iriart, by EH Bai and Mayor of Hiriburu, in the Fifth Constituency; And Peio Dufau, by EH Bai and councilor of Ziburu, and Marie Heguy Urain of civil society, in the sixth constituency.
This is the first time that EH Bai has joined the French left-wing forces and agreed to a joint candidacy with them.
French President Emmanuel Macron has dissolved the National Assembly and called elections after defeat in the European elections. Marine Le Pen’s National Group was the winner of these last elections, also in Ipar Euskal Herria.
Left-wing parties and movements have read the situation and decided to unite to present separate candidacies as the most appropriate way to respond “to Macron’s ultra-liberal policies and the rise of the far right.” In Iparralde, EH Bai, the Socialist Party, the Francia Insumisa Platform, the environmentalists and the Communist Party have joined this initiative.
The elections will be held in two rounds, on June 30 and July 7.
