With his proposal to delete the paragraph on abortion from the criminal code and the demand for free abortions, Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) has ensured that a heated debate on this issue will arise again in Vorarlberg.
Representatives of ‘Youth for Life’ criticized on Friday that the practice of the only doctor who had performed abortions in Vorarlberg until autumn was still open. Only because of a looming gap in care would Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) have agreed to allow abortions to be performed at the Bregenz state hospital.
“The devastating wrong decision for prenatal infanticide at the state hospital must be reversed immediately. We demand the resignation of State Health Councilor Rüscher, who misled the state governor with this bogus argument,” complains Gabriela Huber, president of the organization “Youth for Life”.
Always demonstrations
Abortion advocates, on the other hand, are repeatedly irritated by abortion opponents, who do not let a three-meter-high hedge in front of the Bregenz hospital stop them from making life difficult for women on their way to an operation.
Moreover, the left-wing parties in the state parliament (Greens and SPÖ) support Rauch’s demand for free – or at least cheaper – abortions. Anyone who has an abortion at the LKH is currently charged 720.60 euros – an amount that young women or women with a low income in particular can only afford with great difficulty.
