Ice age already over? – Nehammer: New coalition with the Greens is possible

Date:

Chancellor Karl Nehammer can clearly imagine what many within the ÖVP no longer want: a turquoise-green coalition after the National Council elections. Even Leonore Gewessler, who was reported by the People’s Party, does not sound averse.

After EU Climate Minister Gewessler independently discussed the issue of renaturation, the anger within the People’s Party knew no bounds. The Turquoises felt surprised and betrayed by their junior partner.

There was a breach of trust and the law by the Green politician. The farmers’ association ÖVP and the federal party filed a complaint against the minister. Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) also accused Gewessler of violating the constitution. What’s more: the Greens have ‘disqualified’ themselves as new coalition partners.

A rejection sounds different
Are you joking? Are you serious? According to party leader and Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who recently hugged Green Party leader Werner Kogler at the European Football Championship in Berlin, not everything of the past four and a half years has been bad. He does not want to rule out a new edition. “I think we have overcome many crises together,” the Chancellor told ServusTV on Thursday.

He sees one reason for this in his first representative: “Werner Kogler and I have always had a very good working relationship and we have also promised each other that we would maintain it until election day.”

Gewessler’s solo effort was something of an anomaly; legal action was taken here. He emphasized that if things had been “as they are now” throughout the legislature, “responsible governance and making difficult decisions” would not have been possible. Gewessler is said to have risen above the law to pursue political activism.

Renaturation of the turquoise-green relationship
The climate minister did not seem impressed by the accusations. When asked whether she would form a coalition again with the ÖVP as Green vice-chairman, Gewessler recently said in the “Standaard”: “Why not!” This is the standard that will be used to discuss after the elections – “also with the ÖVP”.

According to current polls, a new coalition seems unattainable:

This already sounds like a “renaturation” of the turquoise-green relationship. Or as Nehammer says: “Everything else will happen on September 29th. show.”
