Fixed deadlines: this is how long our representatives will remain in office

Date:

On September 29, the Austrians will re-elect their representatives. The corresponding ordinance was passed unanimously on Thursday. Other deadlines have now also been set, such as July 9.

Deadlines such as the publication of the electoral register and the submission of election proposals are based on this day. In other words: From July 9, lists that are not yet represented in the National Council can start collecting expressions of support. This applies, for example, to the Beer Party and the Madeline Petrovic list. Candidates must be at least 18 years old on election day. A total of 183 mandates are awarded.

Anyone who is at least 16 years old on September 29 can vote. In addition, you must have Austrian citizenship before the first deadline. According to Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), 6.3 million people nationwide are eligible to vote. The exact number will be known at the end of August.

The government has two more meetings
The current government has two more regular National Council meetings before the elections: one next week and the second on September 18. However, special meetings are possible during the summer holidays. But at least a third of MPs must support this. Austria’s current parliamentarians will remain in office until October 24. The first meeting of the newly elected National Council is scheduled for this day.
